  1. Healthy Smile Part #2–Getting the Right Fit

    April 24, 2012 by taylord8

It was pretty easy and not messy to have all the scans taken.

On my second visit to the orthodontist I had to get my fittings done. When they scanned my teeth, 3D images showed up on the screen. It looked weird. It was cool! The scanner had a flashing light nozzle that blows air into your mouth. It dries up your teeth and cheeks. Awesome!

The technician took scans of my teeth. She had to scan each section carefully. It was really fun. It was interesting to see my teeth up close. It’s surprising when you learn that your teeth are really cool!

The technician uses a wand with a bright light that flashes inside my mouth.

At the end we had a complete 3d digital model. It was different from my brother’s experience because when Christian got his fittings, he got these metal dentures filled with quick-dry goop stuck on his teeth. Luckily, they invented a new and improved way that is less disgusting. Blech!

I thought it was easy because all they did was put an advanced mini-camera in my mouth. I thought it was amazing!

Here I am in the chair. I thought it was very easy!

Next time I visit the orthodontist I’m getting braces! I’m kind of nervous…

Do you have braces? What is it like? Is it cool when they apply them to your teeth? Are you getting braces? I have so many questions!

I’ll share what it is like SOON!

    Your friend,
    Taylor (Open up wide!)

  2. The Bothersome Book Poster

    April 16, 2012 by taylord8

    Greetings, Associates…

Have you noticed my creepy attitude today? It is all because of the book I’ve chosen for my book poster project, A Series of Unfortunate Events, by Lemony Snicket. I chose this book because of the humor and description that is scattered here and there throughout the scary stories.

While still in Rochester, my family and I went to The Strong, (a childrens’ museum), and while I was browsing in the Mystery and Scary Stories section, I came across a bookshelf with an imprint that looked exactly like Olaf,(the sworn enemy’s) tattoo!

Can you find Count Olaf's eye?

When I was researching facts and pictures for my project, I found this video, Scream and Run Away, telling you what to do if Olaf ever comes near you. I hope you enjoy it!

You may watch the video now.

-Taylor (I will get that fortune someday! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!) That was Count Olaf, not me. Wait… AAAAHHHHHHHH! Don’t you remember? Scream and run away!

  3. Lots to Catch Up On…

    April 7, 2012 by taylord8

All dressed up and ready for the "Jazzy" show...

    Hi blog buddies,

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I’ve been pretty busy. Here is what I’ve been up to:

    1. After the show, we took the CMTs (Connecticut Mastery Tests). The fun thing about CMTs was that we got little treats to take home after a hard day of tests. The not-so-fun part was that we had to sit in silence after we finished the tests. (sssshhhh!)
    2. I started doing dance lessons again now that rehearsals for The Sound of Music are over. We do a recital at the end of the year and our costumes just came in. They are so cute! I can’t wait to share some pictures after the recital.
    3. We’ve been practicing JAZZ songs for our spring concert with our new music teacher, Mrs. Shelberg (see her picture above). We performed 5 songs: “Jazz”, “The Blues”, “Jazz is on It’s Way”, “To Swing or Not to Swing”, and “Ode to Jazzers”. Be sure to check out the cool video we did in Mr. Salsich’s Class.
    4. I am working on a new writing assignment in class. We are writing about a special person. I’ll reveal her in another post but just to give you a hint she is my big “sister”.
    5. I took a trip to the orthodontist and am happy to announce that I will be sporting some fancy chompers in the very near future. I think I want to reveal how to get a healthy smile in future posts….

    6. SPRING BREAK!!! My family and I are going to Rochester, NY where my brother was born and we are going to visit Niagara Falls and are planning on going to a Red Sox vs. Blue Jays game in Toronto. I’m excited to learn about my brother’s birthplace and where my parents lived before moving to New England.

      Visit Rochester

We are planning a fun trip.

  4. My Chat with AJ…

    March 6, 2012 by taylord8

    My friend AJ

    Hi Friends,

During tech week (the final week of rehearsals for the play) I had the chance to send AJ (Audrey Jones) an email with questions about her drama career and life as a teen actress. AJ played Maria in The Sound of Music. When I first met her, I found out she had a beautiful voice and hardly had any trouble delivering her lines. As I got to know her, I learned that she was a nice girl and really good actress but I wanted to find out more. Here is what I asked and what she wrote.

    From: Audrey Jones 3/6/12–

Taylor, I had such a great time working with you in this production. You have a beautiful voice and a lot of talent, and I hope you had as much fun as I did. Hopefully I’ll see you again soon, perhaps again on the SHS stage! I look forward to reading your blog. :)

    Q. What are the names of the plays you have been in?

    A. Since I’ve been at Stonington High School I have performed in six productions. I was “Woman #3” in Our Town, a “Who” in Seussical, “Kate Keller” in The Miracle Worker, a “Heavenly Friend” in Carousel, “Diana” in Lend Me a Tenor, and most recently “Maria” in The Sound of Music.

    Q. What do you like to do better, acting or singing?

    A. This is a very tough question. I love to do both, which is why I do both the plays and the musicals. I especially enjoy doing the musicals because I get to sing and act at the same time. If I had to choose one, I would have to choose singing. While it is fun to completely transform yourself into another character, I love the feeling I get when I sing. It is a great way for me to express myself, and a single song can hold a lot of meaning. I still get excited when I get to perform a song that gives me shivers, because it gets me excited about music all over again.

    So AJ...

    Q. What play have you liked performing in the most?

    A. This is another hard question to answer, because every role has challenged me in a different way; however, I would have to say The Sound of Music is my favorite so far. I remember growing up watching the movie, and being completely mesmerized by Julie Andrews. I’m so grateful I have had the chance to play Maria—she is an amazingly complex character. I love every song in The Sound of Music, and even after singing the songs over and over again, I’m still not tired of them. I also enjoyed this musical because of all of the new people that joined the cast and crew. I love being able to share such a big part of my life with such sweet people.

    Q. What are the personality traits of Maria?

    A. I never really understood Maria until I got to play her. She is fun loving, confident, friendly, and strong, but she is also very conflicted. She is caught between wanting to be innocent and free like a child, and needing to grow up and be an adult. I think this is one of the reasons she didn’t make a very good postulant—she is too spontaneous to have the discipline a nun should have. This conflict is also one of the reasons why she had such a difficult time admitting to herself that she loved Captain von Trapp. Falling in love with him would mean no longer being independent, and she would finally have to grow up. By the end of the play, she realizes that it is okay to follow your heart, and she is finally happy.

    Hmmm...very interesting!

    Q. Do you share some of these personality traits? Which ones? Why?

    A. Unlike Maria, I am not very spontaneous and I don’t stand up to people the way she stood up to the Captain. We do have quite a few similarities, however. We both love music and working with children, but I wish I had the confidence she had! I also feel the conflict she felt between wanting to grow up and wanting to stay a child. Growing up is not easy, and there are a lot of times that I wish everything were as simple as it seemed when I was younger. At the same time, I’m happy to have had the experiences I’ve had, and I know that it is important for me to pursue what makes me happy, like she did.

    Q. What grade are you in and where do you plan on going for college?

    A. I am currently a junior, but I can’t wait to apply for college next year! I’m looking at schools that have great theater and music programs, but also a strong math and science department. I still don’t know what I’d like to major in, but I’d like to keep my options open. My current top schools are William & Mary, University of Virginia, Northwestern, Duke, Yale, and Stanford. I’m excited to visit some of these schools this summer!

Thanks AJ! I can’t wait to see you again too!

    Love,
    Taylor (Drama kid)

  5. “Doe, a deer, a female deer!” Stonington Sings Along…

    March 1, 2012 by taylord8

    Hi Friends,

This week we have been running the shows in full costume. Our final production week started with a sing-a-long where members of “The Sound of Music” full cast sang a few songs with the help of the audience. Some of us got into our costumes and greeted the guests. Chloe and I got to meet some goats and had our picture taken with some of the nuns! All in the same night!

Here are the "Martas" trying to be little goat herders.

Here we are posing with some "nuns".

Backstage it’s usually hectic. Luckily the kids have their own little dressing room. We have to do about 7 costume changes during the show! For the sing-a-long I got to wear the play clothes that are made out of curtains.

The "cage" is where they keep all the costumes and props.

My cast got to sing “Doe, a Deer” and “So Long Farewell”. Luckily, I felt very comfortable on stage. It was good practice for the real show. Being on stage performing for a real audience felt great!

This is during the sing-a-long. A couple of the cast members lead the audience and we all followed along with the words on the screen.

We also got to do a couple of preview shows for the Stonington schools. That was really like performing in front of a packed audience. The auditorium was FULL! It was very exciting because we got to change costumes, get our hair and make-up done and got to perform for our friends!

Mr. Salsich's 3rd Grade class! It was fun to have them in the audience for the preview show.

What would your favorite part of a production be? Would you like to help backstage or are you a performer?

The show opens this weekend. I can’t wait!

    Your Friend,
Taylor (The girl that likes pink!)

  6. Sound of Music FLASH MOB!!!

    February 19, 2012 by taylord8

Tonight we performed the flash mob we have been practicing for the last couple of days. It was really fun! We ran out onto the gym floor right in the middle of a basketball game. I don’t know if you can see me but I am on the right side with 2 ponytails. It seemed like the audience liked it. I hope you do too! I will have to ask my mom to post the video she made of us practicing for the flash mob. <3 Taylor

  7. Seeing Double

    February 15, 2012 by taylord8

The Gretls, Martas, Brigittas and Louisas

    Hello Friends,

It’s been a couple of busy weeks since my last post about The Sound of Music. We continue to practice our music, choreography, and lines. Some of the rehearsals have been with the full cast. There are over 80 kids in the cast and crew. With so many people it’s very crowded and I find it a little overwhelming especially when everybody is talking. Can you imagine what it’s like to be the director responsible for all those noisy kids?

In my last post about the play I shared a photograph of the Von Trapp Family. There are 7 Von Trapp children: Liesl, age 16; Friedrich, age 14; Louisa, age 13; Kurt, age 11; Brigitta, age 9; Marta (me), age 7; and little Gretl, age 5. What you might not know is that some of the children’s parts are shared between 2 people. For example, I share the role of Marta with my friend Chloe. She is a second grader in my school. Here is a list of the other actresses and the part they share: Louisa is played by Ana and Tessa, Brigitta is played by Maggie and Grace, Marta is played by Chloe and me, and Gretl is played by Bobbie and Jenny.

I think it’s great to double – cast because it gives other people chances to be in a play and also if one person is sick, the other is always there to fill in that part. I think double – casting is challenging because when you see the other people performing the part you share, you think you could’ve been up there, and feel anxious to go up and perform.

    Steven (Friedrich) and Avery (Kurt)

Now about the boys…I think that they are really funny. I feel bad for them sometimes because they are always surrounded by so many girls! I think they are cool with it though because they never complain. Let’s hear it for the boys! Hooray!

    Taylor (Marta Squared)

  9. 2012 Super Bowl: Patriots vs. Giants!

    February 8, 2012 by taylord8

    Hello Friends,

A few days ago my class was buzzing with excitement. They couldn’t wait for the Super Bowl to start! In fact, Mr. Salsich used football to teach us all about multiplication. Here is a video my classmates and I worked on (I am playing the role of “Oreo”).

Did you know that some people watch the Super Bowl just for the commercials? Some of the commercials are very entertaining! I think my very favorite commercial was the one when a baby and a Grandma used a bouncy chair for a slingshot to get a bag of Doritos. The baby’s mean big brother wasn’t sharing! I thought it was very cute and silly because the baby was adorable and at the end they teased the boy back. What was your favorite commercial?

I really enjoyed the half-time show starring Madonna! My mom told me that Madonna was the Lady Gaga of the ’80s! It was so awesome! I loved it because she mixed in a lot of other celebrities like: Nicki Minaj, Cee lo Green, and LMFAO. I especially liked the amazing acrobats whose choreography made for an incredible background.

I didn’t think that I would care about the football game but I watched the whole thing with my dad. The final score was a nail-biting 21 to 17 with the Giants winning. I was disappointed because I was rooting for the Patriots. Did you watch the Super Bowl? Who was your favorite team?

    Later,
    Taylor (Mrs. Tom Brady)

  10. The Hills Are Alive…

    February 1, 2012 by taylord8

    Cast photo

    Hello friends,

I have been very busy at school and after school! As I mentioned before, I am playing the role of Marta (age 7)  in “The Sound of Music”. The play is being performed at the High School and I am working with lots of kids. We spend a lot of time together and are getting to be really close friends. I think that in order to do your very best acting on stage you need to get to know all of the other actors and actresses. The director, Mrs. Stanley, always tells us that we have to pretend like we are real brothers and sisters. After all, the Von Trapps are a family!

In case you don’t know anything about “The Sound of Music”, the story is about a postulant (a girl who is in training to be a nun) named Maria that is sent to take care of 7 children (the Von Trapps) whose dad is very strict. The kids and the dad fall in love with Maria who teaches them to be kind and to love music just as much as she does.

My favorite part of the whole play is to sing and act out the song, “My Favorite Things”. It has a lot of jumping and playing and I have a lot of lines in that scene! The version of the play that I am doing is a little different from the movie but we get to sing all of the same songs. Have you seen the movie “The Sound of Music”? What is your favorite song or scene? Be sure to tell me in the comments, please.

    Taylor, a.k.a. Marta Von Trapp
